I'm a little curious... How many of you will be playing Final Fantasy 14 when it comes out? I know of a handful of people who are committed to playing it, perhaps we should all pick the same server.

I've heard all about what to expect, I know all about the negative points of FF11, and I really don't care to hear more of it - I just want to gauge BoW interest and see how many people will be killing time in FF14 until the beta for Telara comes around~ (read: I know the game supposedly sucks in a few major ways, but I'm bored and will be playing it anyways).

For those that may NOT have heard a peep about the game, FF11 was Square Enix's first foray into MMO-land, but the game was grindy and heavily built for console MMO players (the PC controls were "teh suck", and yes it really was that big of a deal...) - and apparently FF14's controls won't be much better.

Blades of Wrath is a guild name that reaches back to the early days of EQ, but as times change, so do guilds. We have a couple old EQ BoW people...

Blades of Wrath is a guild name that reaches back to the early days of EQ, but as times change, so do guilds. We have a couple old EQ BoW people floating around from time to time, but rarely, as the majority of this guild's core was forged in Vanguard roughly three years ago. The vast majority of our players are old EQ raiders, including myself, but our experience spans many servers, eras, and games. Right now we are simply bored waiting for Rift: Planes of Telara, but if that goes the way of easymode like so many other games, we'll be waiting for something else soon enough.

At our heart we are simply a guild of old EQ raiders who don't have much patience for the unorganized fluffy bullshit that exists in most guilds.

We have largely avoided the problems we all saw in EQ, with bloated rosters full of children and weak players, largely because raid caps on games like Vanguard do not force us to have 80+ people on our roster. We are highly selective when it comes to new players, regarding both character and skill, and our high standards don't have an expiration date. I've personally kicked members in the middle of a raid who have raided with us for nearly a year, in much the same manner as I have removed new recruits. We would rather fail than be a guild of selfish arrogant children, or mediocre players, and the scrutiny isn't merely top-down.

A number of outsiders have commented about our guild and used the term "militaristic", but that doesn't even come close. Imagine a guild in which players who screw up are called out publicly and without ceremony, regardless of their guild rank or the importance of their class. Imagine a guild where a member can tell off the leader in vent in the middle of a raid because he's doing something wrong, and the leader is expected to admit his mistake and learn from it. Imagine a guild where you actually like/respect 95% of the members (at least I do) because they are mature and pull their own weight. Imagine a guild with a core of elite players who aren't teen-tween egocentric children hungry for their next piece of loot. Imagine a guild of mature adults, with thick skin, who are honest to the point of insulting, that play these games simply to be the best. If you can picture all that, BoW is more.

Fuck the children. Fuck the selfish lootwhores. Fuck the cliques. Fuck the players who think they are the best when they aren't. Fuck the players who need to say they are the best, because they usually aren't. Fuck dancing around egos and avoiding problems because they make you uncomfortable. Fuck anything that doesn't make this guild better, stronger, more stable, or more competitive. Fuck these shallow games with their time-sink no-skill content that gets laid at the feet of the mediocre masses.

Rift needs to not suck.

Long live Blades of Wrath.

EDIT: Replaced all my F'words with "screw". :) Then re-edited and changed it all back.

Curse:: How many points will you have available for your souls at max level? Previous info alludes to 1 per level, but the last root ability is at 51 points. Is there any point acquisition aside from leveling?

Scott Hartsman: It is tied to one point per level, and what we fully expect to happen when we release is the same thing that's happening now in testing. We made the idea of having different roles, or what you might think of as a spec, available for purchase. So don't think of it as "man I've only got one point, and if I want ability X I have to invest in all of it and now I'm locked in". If you have four roles you can swap back and forth between, then great, you might have a paladin soul you use for a dungeon, and then one push button away you have a role that has spoints spread across other souls. The character I'm playing on alpha right now has two specs I use, if I'm just plugging through content I'm just 100% Beastmaster. I can also switch to my soul set that's 75% paladin, and 25% beastmaster because there are some good synergies there. Then when I want something new I switch to my other set which is part Champion and part Beastmaster. The point is you're able to take on multiple roles and switch between them at will. You can buy additional role slots at your trainer and you're able to put the roles right on your hot bar and swap anytime you're not in combat. It gives players a level of infinite discovery, and lets them find new and interesting combos to do without getting tired of their characters.

Scott Hartsman: At the moment the only locks we have in testing, are the choices you make when you first create your character. As you level up, are offered quests, and find other opportunities to get souls, you'll find that both sides have access to the same souls. There are some fictional gymnastics that we have to do to make that make sense, but at the end of the day we felt the need to do that - we didn't want to create a situation where we would have to balance the sides, and that isn't a winning road for players or us.
