I'm a little curious... How many of you will be playing Final Fantasy 14 when it comes out? I know of a handful of people who are committed to playing it, perhaps we should all pick the same server.
I've heard all about what to expect, I know all about the negative points of FF11, and I really don't care to hear more of it - I just want to gauge BoW interest and see how many people will be killing time in FF14 until the beta for Telara comes around~ (read: I know the game supposedly sucks in a few major ways, but I'm bored and will be playing it anyways).
For those that may NOT have heard a peep about the game, FF11 was Square Enix's first foray into MMO-land, but the game was grindy and heavily built for console MMO players (the PC controls were "teh suck", and yes it really was that big of a deal...) - and apparently FF14's controls won't be much better.
I intend to check it out. Like you said, I'm not really playing another other game atm, so what the hell. I didn't play 11 so I'm not really sure what to expect, but I'll give it a shot.
Although I could just resub to Aion, switch to Soki's server and hunt her in the abyss....

I think 3-4 of the guys at work were in the closed beta, and never even bothered to play past the first night.

I was going to check it out...but then realized it's not worth the 50-75 bucks. I'm playing the Age of Conan free trial now just for the fatalities. Hopefully Rift beta is soon.
I heard FF14 open beta starts Wednesday, if I get in I'll definitely check it out for free and gauge if it's worth investing $$ into.

Yeah, I know what you mean. If I knew there was a MMO coming out in the next couple of months that I'd actually like to play I most likely wouldn't sink money into this one, FF14. Telara's beta is still nowhere in sight, I have a feeling it's still going to be a loooong wait.

Although i do have strong strong doubts on how well this whole playtime penalty thing is going to play out.

This is the first I've heard of this. Huh, what asian MMO have I played in the past few years that constantly spammed you every hour or so if you'd been on too long? More than a couple. Hmm..!
It would be a little ironic if the game itself gives some kind of penalty for playing for too much it... when it turns out to suck anyways. "Please, don't play our game!"

So... It regenerates when offline, or when not EXPing in general? It sounds like a reverse form of "rest exp" coined from WoW. It doesn't sound like it'll be much of a problem, but we'll see.
I read somewhere else that the block itself is limited to a class individually. Grind one class' EXP for 25 hours in one day? No problem! Switch to a different class and grind that one for some more with an unblocked exp bar. <shrugs>

Looks like you can "apply" for the open beta this evening since the beta is now underway. Good luck getting the link to work, it's congested atm. No surprise, since the beta just officially started. If your computer meets the minimum requirements the process will generate a cd-key, I am told.

It looks like it's working now.
edit: I take it back. It's just getting a little bit further than it was last night. Heh. I got as far as the beta code, but now the account management system is giving that "congested" webpage message, instead of the open beta application website, so I can't get into account management to input the code. bummer

That sucks. Hopefully it won't be too long.
I think Fileplanet is offering the beta client download here: http://www.fileplanet.com/215249/download/Final-Fantasy-XIV-Beta-Launcher
When I say I "think" it's the client I mean that I haven't used this one myself (fileplanet's download manager and my computer don't get along, otherwise I'd check it for you all). I got the launcher from the ff14 beta portal after getting the beta key. It didn't require any login information or anything of the sort in order to use the patcher, so I see no reason why you couldn't use it to get the game installed yourself if you happen to be somebody still waiting for a beta key.

I was interested in FF14 until I heard about the xp leveling cap. I hardly get time to play MMO's these says unless I actually block time off in my calendar. When I do block that time off I will sometimes play for 24 hours straight. So not the game for me.

I picked Wutai as it seemed to be a middle-of-the-road server as far as general population goes.
I log on this morning and it's shown as the most packed one. Murphy's law...
Plus, it has the coolest sounding name. Apparently character names are reserved from open beta to the corresponding launch server. Unless there's a reason to consider another server we'd may as well go with it =)
After trying it out for a little bit I have decided to buy the retail game. Mainly out of boredom since the Telara beta could be quite a long time in coming...
User Interface was my #1 concern for the game going into the beta.
Having played Final Fantasy 11 it seems that Final Fantasy 14's user interface is still very console-based. I'm getting used to it, it doesn't seem as bad as FF11 (it's been a while since I played FF11... I just seem to remember getting a lot more frustrated (http://www.break.com/index/angry_german_kid_with_subtitles.html)with FF11's controls).
I almost exclusively use the keyboard for all navigation, to include camera control, menu navigation, and targetting. I've found the mouse control to be a little clumsy and laggy, which slows me down. Supposedly they will be improving (or "fixing," depending on how you look at it) the laggy handling of mouse control in the near future. Overall, I would say that I personally can adapt and get past the very different feel Final Fantasy's user interface gives... but I know that it's gonna turn off a lot of people.

The beginning and the tail-end of torrents seem to always be the slowest segments, by my observations.

I've toyed around with Lancer and Conjuror... Honestly I'm still at the very low levels. I've spent more time exploring the areas and looking up various information than actually adventuring, crafting, or harvesting.
I heard somewhere that both of the two magic classes get some healing spells to toy around with. I'm just experimenting with what synergy I can find (some abilities can be used cross-class, apparently), no idea what type of character I'll build at launch. Something healing related, if possible. It's very odd that there is no dedicated healing class.

Shogg I never really got very far because they did play dates. Wiped chars often.. Tried a few classes never had to repair / didnt bother crafting.. mostly played for awhile killed stuff reported all the broken crap i ran into lol. The broken ui at the time.. was a real let down for me so i didnt try very hard. Every time i have come back tho its been alittle better. from what i could tell the crafting system was somewhat like FF11.

Yeah, i'm with Nik there. FF might end up being a hit on the PS3, but i see a lot of the PC crowd not getting past the initial intro to that UI.
Why it has to be that crappy when they have countless games out there to copy from is beyond me.

I couldn't get it downloaded and finally gave up, too.
The class skill point system in this game is so retarded. Basically each attack you get a % chance to gain class skill points, and that % seems to be the same for what is essentially your auto attack as it is for your hardest hitting abilities. So basically the game encourages you to sit there and auto attack rather than killing monsters as quickly as possible.
As a caster I'm not even sure it's worth using any damage spells at all. I'd probably be best just debuffing the mob the mob's offense and then doing nothing but auto attack and heals if necessary.
Eh, I'm strongly reconsidering my pre-order at this point.
Edit: I'd say the worst part though is just the complete lack of direction. You're basically left to figure out for yourself where to find anything at all.

Yah I picked casting classes to play as well, and most effecient way to level is spam auto attack :/ Once you stop getting skill ups you gotta switch classes and level that til it stops, then try another class. Crafting is pretty shitty, UI needs alot of tweaks. Hard to judge the game without all the content in it, so hopefully they listen to feedback and adjust it to make it a little more fun. I'll probably play it anyways for a few months, bored of everything else.

Personally I would be totally fine with having a hard to figure out world, a world like EQ with no quest markers and such, but that UI is so terrible i didnt even want to try.
For a company like Square/Enix to blow it this bad is beyond me. I have never been so utterly frustrated and disgusted by a UI in any game I have ever played, MMO or Console.
Fusoya
09-08-2010, 12:26 PM
I don't really think it's all that terrible honestly. I disliked the game strongly at the start. I was ready to quit at level 5 and never go back. Boredom set in and I leveled a sub-class and then I hit level 8. The advanced combat has a lot of great potential, but you don't get to see that until you suffer through a good 5-10 hours of not knowing what's going on.
As you learn the UI and the mechanics of the game, the flow does greatly improve. Until you do, it feels incredibly choppy and awkward. You really have to devote like 10-15 hours to FF14 before you can judge the game as a whole in my opinion. It's not what anyone is used to, but maybe that's a good thing.
I'm pretty sure we're playing the same beta version as asia started with, meaning they fixed a lot of the stuff we're suffering with. Aion did the same thing, then the difference between beta and launch will be enormous. I'm expecting a highly polished game come launch.
I really love my character right now (mostly because it's broken OP), but we knew that was coming anyways. With that said, I'm still not sure I'm going to invest any money into it and play it at launch. I do think if you have beta access you shouldn't call it quits unless you've put in at least 10 hours and tried sub classes and mixing abilities.

Cronous, Anaeran, and myself are monkeying around with our PS3 controls. I had honestly forgotten that they could even be plugged into PCs until Mazam said that...
Getting it to run on the PC is just a matter of finding the right drivers, it seems. I'll let'cha know how I find the PS3 controls are when I play it some more. All I can say right now is that I died a death to an aggro mob when I logged in because I had no idea how to select a target with my controls. So noob =[

There aren't enough buttons on the PS3 controller. I have to keep reverting to the keyboard for things like ventrilo. I thought about binding ventrilo to the PS3 controller itself and replacing the emote key, but haven't done so. I've already adapted to the PC controls well enough that it won't really matter.
Targetting and camera controls with a controller seem to be better than keyboard/mouse.
